I had a lot of experience giving IVs to classmates then patients but I myself had not had a full Myers cocktail treatment. This is why I went to my friend, Tara Gignac ND, to have my IVs done. I have been going now for 3 weeks in a row. I’m like most of you and I do not like needles. Why would we? I don’t think we were designed to enjoy getting poked by sharp objects. It can hurt and you recoil like when touching a thorned plant. But like the rose, there is more to benefit from than just to be put off by the rose’s thorns.

I’ve enjoyed getting my IV therapy because it gives me energy. I also enjoy the time I get just for myself knowing I am doing something very good for me. I need to take care of myself so I can take care of my patients, my husband and family. I’m just like many of you who struggle to find balance and sometimes find it difficult to get through the day with enough energy. Myers cocktails through IV therapy are doing the trick for me and my patients.

Check out how IV therapy helps http://thehealingoasis.ca/iv-therapy-barrie.php Our IV clinic days are Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoons.

I recently read this book when I was asked to by my patient. He is a 60 year old man with a beer belly. This book by Brad King is very easy to read and explains how a man’s body works as his hormones change. There was a lot you could take away from this book and here are some tips you can consider for yourself or the man in your life.

- Have lab blood tests done and analyzed

- Drink more water

- Lift weights – 3 sets of each exercise maximizes the effects

- Consume a Whey protein – get a hormone-free version. We sell some at the clinic.

- Work with a health professional to create a personalized plan for you.

One of my patients came in recently feeling sluggish, tired, emotional and with signs of hypothyroidism. Discussing a patient’s case fully is often enough to put me on the right path of treatment but I also find testing to be extremely helpful in determining exactly what is going on.

We decided to order a Thyroid blood test to show her levels. In naturopathic medicine we deal a lot in the grey areas and use a term called subclinical hypothyroidism where it’s not quite at the level of treating with pharmaceutical grade synthroid but may be addressed using herbs, diet and supplements. This is why its important to see the numbers on reports.

Her blood work came out fine. Then we turned to saliva hormone testing. Here is an example of a report we might get back:

Her results came back as low cortisol. This was extremely helpful as some herbs used in adrenal formulas can decrease cortisol even further. I wouldn’t want to prescribe something that normally would be very helpful for most people but in her case, might make things worse.

Testing can sometimes get expensive but it is really helpful for the practitioner to measure what’s going on and then track it in the future to see your progress. Then you can literally see how you are improving.

Consider testing options http://thehealingoasis.ca/naturopathic-medicine-barrie.php for yourself to see what’s really going on.

As my favourite Scottish Reflexologist used to say, “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?”

I’ve been realizing that my evenings book up quite quickly. It’s hard for some people to take time off work or get the kids to come to see their naturopath during day time hours. Katherine Parent, our nutritionist and I have decided to offer some Saturday hours. These are especially great for:

- commuters

- kids

- workaholics

It’s our goal to help as many people as possible to feel better, have less pain, more energy, better sleep and be the best person they can be. We are here to help and now we are here to help on Saturdays.

So, am I the only one who ate bad food watching the Super Bowl? Probably not. Yes, I too ate meatballs smothered in barbeque sauce, sausage rolls and jalapeño poppers. Just because I know what to eat and recommend how everyone else should eat, doesn’t mean that I don’t cheat and eat bad foods too.

It’s all about moderation. My husband’s new favourite saying is “I eat well 100%, 80% of the time.” Essentially the 80:20 rule. 80% of the time you do really well. Eat all your greens and fruits, have good healthy proteins and healthy fats. So if you eat 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, that’s 21 meals a week. So, approximately 4 meals a week are not 100% good for you. If you decide at the beginning of the week, which meals those will be, you won’t slip up. Also, it’s been shown that those who cheat on their diets actually lose more weight than those people who stick religiously to their diets.

So there you go. Guilt free Super Bowl Sunday. Just as well, since I have a weakness for jalapeño poppers:)

When experiencing the painful symptoms of heartburn or an upset stomach, we’re often quick to reach for an over-the-counter solution [...]

When experiencing the painful symptoms of heartburn or an upset stomach, we’re often quick to reach for an over-the-counter solution like an antacid. Yet by addressing the root causes of your stomach distress and changing your lifestyle habits, you can treat your stomach troubles naturally – and possibly eliminate them altogether.

People are reaching for convenience foods more and more these days, and are moving away from natural, whole foods. The problem is that the more convenience we have the more toxic our bodies become.

If we’re not eating the proper foods meant for our body’s individual constitution, then the body has to work that much harder to break down our food and assimilate it.

To keep us shelling out our money, the makers of antacid products promise that we can continue our over-indulgent love affair with the rich, high-calorie and unhealthy foods that are usually the primary sources of our symptoms.

Want to kick the antacid habit? Start by drinking more water.

Hydration and digestion

Hydration is one of the most important factors for digestion. Water helps to produce the hydrochloric acid that our stomachs need, and it helps line our digestive system with mucous to keep it lubricated.

Did you know that about 70% of our body weight is water? One of the major consequences of dehydration is that your body’s systems will pull the water they need from the body itself. And the first place water is pulled from is our digestive system, like the stomach.

Note: It’s best to drink liquids away from your meal, to ensure that the stomach acid is at its optimum level and not watered down.

Acid and digestion

Want to see how digestion works? If you put hydrogen peroxide on a piece of meat, you’ll see it sizzle and break down the meat. That’s exactly what the acid in your stomach does when it’s breaking down what you’ve eaten.

Or for a gentler image, think about what happens when you marinade that same piece of meat. The citric acid (vinegar, lemon juice, etc.) breaks down your meat to tenderize and soften it before cooking.

Antacids actually buffer the stomach acid so it can’t break down proteins properly, creating a cycle of needing to take more of them. People who take antacids because they get heartburn could probably eliminate those systems by drinking enough water to help their bodies produce enough acid for the stomach.

A nutrition professional can work with you to address your specific digestive issues. In the meantime, try kicking the antacid habit yourself by increasing your water intake and decreasing your dependence on convenience foods. Read about the 10 worst foods: www.thehealingoasis.ca/news/?p=472
